In 2012, Margaret Miller, founder of Wellesong, launched her first wellness company, The Ladybird Group, LLC, and began teaching Tai Chi in the greater Atlanta area. The ladybird (ladybug) was chosen for the name because French folklore tells us that if a ladybird lands on you, and then flies away, it takes all your "ills" away with it. As demand for classes steadily increased over the years, Margaret's vision to create broad accessibility to this "meditation in motion" has taken shape, and Wellesong has become a premier provider of Tai Chi instruction.
The Ladybird satellite classes and company were integrated into Wellesong, LLC in 2017. Fondly dubbed "Traveling Tai Chi," Wellesong is gratified to have shared Tai Chi with up to 100 program participants each week. Many of the original class members from 2012 continue to practice Tai Chi, and are among the most enthusiastic ambassadors for this meditation in motion!
Wellesong's name is derived form the word "welle," which is "wave" in German, and "song," which is translated from the Chinese to mean an opening, loosening, or relaxation of the joints. The name was designed to evoke a feeling of serenity and wave-like peace, along with a recognition that, with practice, internal calm in mind, body, and spirit, can be achieved. The image of "well(ness)" paired with "song" in English, of course, is easily imagined, as the body, mind, and spirit are meant to be in harmony!
Wellesong offers classes in the traditional Tai Chi forms, and focuses on health and wellness in every class. We are board certified to teach the Tai Chi for Health Institute (TCHI) programs, as well. TCHI was founded by Dr. Paul Lam, of Australia, and more than 8 million people have enjoyed and benefited from his programs worldwide. These programs have been recommended by the Arthritis Foundation, the CDC, and many health-related governmental agencies around the world.
